Project 2:  Understanding Forces in Solid Structure and Surface Structure

In a group of 6 , we were to propose a building (solid construction or surface construction) and identify the different types of structural systems used in the construction of the building -- Metropol Parasol. We had to describe each structural system identified in terms of function, material and load distribution. Also, we had produced models showing the different structural systems used in the above building as well as the connection detail. At the end we were required to prepare one A4 size booklet, analysing the success or failure of the model together with the mitigating measures. The booklet does include a brief introduction of the building, construction method, modelling process as well as detailing of different parts of the buildings to show how it is constructed.

As for the individual task, I was required to  2D detail drawing (isometric, section) to show the  of the selected buildings complete with annotations and specifications to show understanding on how the building is constructed.

Learning Outcomes

1. Able to identify basic structural systems in construction.

2. Able to compare solid and surface construction systems.

3. Learn how to recognize and apply the implications of construction system in design.
