In a group of two, we were required to design a bird watching tower for the character we have chosen. This project was executed after a site visit to Fraser's Hill, Pahang.

Our character is an ex- convict. he has turned over a new leaf and has a desire to start a new life. But at the same time, he can't immediately adapt himself to the environment as well as to the people. He wants to interact with the community but privcy is his prority. This tower serves as a transition place for him.

The structure on the surface looks like a tree. A tree represents hope, it is a symbol of new beginning of life. The form of a tree soar upward into the light, conveying aspiration. The shape of this model in which the bottom is smaller is a solution for the  space constraints as in small area and slopping ground.

The tower is located at the area at Allan's Water where one can have a most complete view of the whole environment, fulfilling the character's demand for seeing people

There's no normal staircase for circulation in this tower. The character climbs up to the top on a daily basis as a reminder to learn from the past the mistake he has made while looking to the future. The absence of the staircase also increases the difficulties for outsider to go up to the top.

The top space has a connection to the nature environment visually. The bottom area is easy accessible to people, it encourages interactions and. It brings out a sense of openness with the flowing design that invites people to go in.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Able to transform sketches into physical models

  • Learnt to interpret and analyze simple site context

  • Learnt tointerpret and analyze client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a building

In groups, we were required to conduct site analysis of the physical context, social, historical issues within Allan's Water.
