The first assignment for Project 2 requires an analysis of the site context as a starting point. We had visited Lembah Bujang, Kedah and produced site analysis and the ‘genius loci’ of the place. Project 2B followed by requiring us to produce a concept design for a Visitor Interpretive Centre based on the site analysis conclusions.

The fragmented volumes create an central courtyard while the circulation extends in four directions between the interior and exterior. Creating a visual connection to the artifacts on display, the broken pieces of space move visitors through the culture and history of Bujang valley. Entering the building, they will be enclosed by the fragments at the intermediate space which is the central courtyard. Interaction among the visitors and the historic monuments is interesting to be seen.

On the second level, visitors are able to walk on the top of the ground level to move from one space to another. By contrast with the ground level, it does not give any sense of protection as the void spaces below. At this point, people feel more exposed and privileged. It is enjoyable to look at the view of the surrounding without being blocked.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Able to produce site analysis

  • Learnt to generate concepts design for a public building based on the site analysis.

  • Learnt translate observance into solid ideas in the design process.
